Melanie Charnock

About Me

I am Melanie Charnock a UKCP accredited Psychotherapist and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor also trained as a Couple Therapist, Group Facilitator and Clinical Supervisor.

I offer therapeutic services either in person face to face, via video conferencing or by telephone from my private practice based in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne to individuals, couples and groups aged 18 and over. I provide short, medium and long-term therapy driven by your needs.  The sessions are 50 minutes starting with an initial assessment.

Since every individual has unique problems, goals, and therapeutic pace, I provide therapy that is flexible and tailored to each person. I offer a confidential, non-judgemental and supportive space with the aim to help you explore yourself and grow.

My Qualifications, Training and Experience

I hold a Master’s degree in Integrative Psychotherapy from Newman University, Birmingham and a postgraduate diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy from The Northern Guild for Psychotherapy and Counselling (NGPC). I also have a diploma in Psychotherapy, and one in Therapeutic Counselling from the NGPC, as well as certificates in Couples Work and Supervision Skills. I am trained in group facilitation. I have completed the OU/BACP training on “How to do counselling online: a coronavirus primer” and the UKCP Covid-19 Online Working Guidance.

I have delivered therapy in GP practices in primary health care settings, as well as for third sector counselling services. I also worked as a therapist at the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy and Counselling. Along with my extensive background in short and long-term individual counselling, I have experience of providing short term therapy to couples and facilitating bereavement support groups. Alongside my private practice I am currently providing counselling within the IAPT service of the NHS.

It seems like a lifetime away when I worked in a large private company that was driven by performance management and meeting tight deadlines.  What has never left me is the experience of pressure each employee, including myself endured, bringing with it stress and at other times a real sense of achievement.   I therefore know what it is like to be in a fragile workforce which is especially relevant with coronavirus and its anticipated long-term impact.

My areas of expertise are: Bereavement, Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), low mood, anxiety, dealing with negative thoughts, relationship problems, depression, grief and loss, sleep deprivation, procrastination, self- esteem, transgenerational influences and work-related issues.

As a registered member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), I am bound by their professional ethical codes of conduct and have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service DBS Certificate (previously the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).
